Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek
7 out of 10
Sinek puts forward an excellent model for understanding humanity's evolutionary past and it's disconnect with modern work environments. Endorphins relieve pain and feel good in a runner's high or as a byproduct of laughter. Dopamine climaxes at the time of an accomplishment, with little drips keeping you on track along the way. Serotonin accompanies pride. Oxytocin accompanies trust. Cortisol accompanies anxiety.
All of these neurochemicals are very useful for pack animals. But, endorphins/dopamine can be addictive in solitude--while serotonin/oxytocin accumulate slowly and reinforce socially. Better social practices can interrupt the cycle between selfish acts and group anxiety.
