Sine qua non for animal life, even insects partake in mild versions of sleep.  Some creatures, like certain bats, snooze almost all the time.  The variability of sleep habits across species is mysterious.  So is the fact that sleep costs time.  Time that could be used for other valuable activities--like besting rivals and avoiding predators!  Questions about the origins and evolution of sleep don't have many answers.  But, researchers have recently made significant breakthroughs toward understanding the benefits.  Actually, it is a fairly miraculous panacea for almost all ailments.   Engaging in healthy sleep can serve as the foundation for overall well-being.
