The Technology Trap by Carl Benedikt Frey

What usually happens when new technology disrupts an economy and a society?  Examples include: The Printing Press, The Steam Engine, Electricity, Computers, AI.

Some people will foretell prophecies of a dystopian future riddled with mass unemployment.  Some will envision widespread luxury and leisure.  If history has taught us anything, it is that both forecasts are likely incorrect.  Increased production efficiency leads to more overall wealth.  At all income levels, many people will work hard to continually improve their standard of living.  There will be some uneasiness, unrest, and notable political outcries.  There will be confusion about what skills will be needed for someone to thrive in the new economy.  There will be concern about possible and respectable jobs for unskilled workers.  There will be migration toward opportunities, though some people will be more mobile than others.

Will the newest tech tremor be radically different than the previous ones?  Maybe.  But it helps to know the patterns.
