The Iranian Revolution began in 1978. Since then, the country has worked hard to position itself as a regional power and take on large global superpowers. A Sunni majority nation, tensions regularly grow with its Shia neighbors. Things got hot for eight years of the Iran-Iraq War. Foundationally, the regime has a huge amount of distrust toward the USA. Any time American Soldiers are in the Middle East presents an opportunity to oppose multiple adversaries at once. The Arab Spring, Syrian destabilization, nuclear treaties, international sanctions, and political assassinations have presented problems. Supporting Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and Hamas in Palestine clearly shows their intent to flex their local might. Today, the Supreme Leader and his government are appropriately concerned about external threats. Also, however, the Iranian people (epitimized by young women) are displeased with the weak economic situation, official corruption, and freedom suppression by the morality police.
