Chop Fry Watch Learn by Michelle T. King
5 out of 10Fu Pei-Mei was kind of a big deal. She was part of the massive amount of Chinese Nationalists who fled to Taiwan in 1949. In the tumultuous new ROC (where family members were separated for decades) she became famous for her cookbooks and television shows. She was well-versed in regional food across China and East Asia, as well as many Western desserts. Her intelligence, authenticity, and language skills made her instantly likable. Today, her legacy remains somewhat "retro cool" all over the world among migrants and foodies.
The author uses Fu and food to identify with her own heritage as a second-generation American.
