Used for sustenance, cooking oil, lamp oil, hygiene, medicine, anointment, and sacred rituals—olive oil has been a key component of Mediterranean life since antiquity.  Fraudulently cutting a premium product and still selling it at a high price is nothing new.  In the modern world “extra virgin” signifies no additives included.  European regulators must taste the olive oil before granting approval. Currently, there is new technology and new experimental startups creating buzz around olive oil in places like Australia, Chile, and California.
