In order to match up against the German Wehrmacht in the 2nd World War, the US Army needed to create divisions to specialize in mountain warfare.  Trained in the Rockies and the Cascades, American soldiers bravely fought the Germans in the Italian Alps in important combat that helped lead to Allied victory.  Also, if needed, the mountain warriors were prepared to fight on the main islands of Japan.  Many of these elite army men went on to have prestigious careers, including Bob Dole.
