Jerusalem: The Biography by Simon Sebag Montefiore
8.5 out of 10

Jerusalem has a long history and this is a long book.  Beginning as tribal settlements in the Levant, the Israelites built the City of David over 3000 years ago.  Since then, conquering armies have frequently marched from foreign places such as Egypt, Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome, Arabia, Turkey, and Western Europe.

Striving for purity and piety, the city continuously finds itself entangled in world affairs.  Visited by Richard the Lionheart and Richard Nixon.  Part of the Napoleonic Wars and integral to the Zionist dream after the nightmare of the World Wars.  Today Jerusalem is divided and the prospect of more war is omnipresent.
