The Informant by Kurt Eichenwald
7 out of 10Grishamesque non-fiction.
In 1992 the FBI was tipped off about a price-fixing racket involving the multinational agricultural enterprise Adler Daniels Midland in Decatur, IL. The cooperating witness was Mark Whitacre--head of a large division at ADM. He went on to assist in sting operations and helped lure conspirators onto US soil. Whitacre, however, misled the investigators who eventually found that Mark was entangled in a slew of other white-collar crimes. Deservingly, he ended up in jail. But, one could see him as somewhat of a tragic figure--unaware of the pain he caused others and the lies he told to himself.
