Napoleon in Egypt by Paul Strathern
7.5 out of 10

After successful battles in Italy, citizen general Bonaparte lead an expedition of 40,000 French soldiers, artists, scientists, engineers, poets and historians to Egypt.  Military triumph came at Alexandria, Rosetta, Cairo, further along the Nile, Suez and into Syria.  Ultimately, British naval blockades, Turkish and Arab armies as well as infectious plague prevented Napoleon from marching on Constantinople or expanding an Oriental Empire into India.  Never one to dwell on setbacks, he returned to Paris to erect himself emperor and subsequently take over Europe.
